GOALS approach to community involvement is multifaceted. One of the easily overlooked part of its commitment is the earnestness with which it approaches the problem of trash.

Throughout the interviews I’ve been conducting participants repeatedly bring up the recycling program goals has introduced. GOALS not only teaches participants the difference between trash, compost, and reclyables and how to deal with each class of material, it also requires participants to clean up their communities for an hour three times a week.

Participants, particularly at the sites that have been established the longest, thus gain a new respect for and ownership over the cleanliness of their local neighborhoods.
