I met Zac Halberd during my stay at Eucalyptus House. Eucalyptus House is a bed and breakfast run by the Jean-Louis family located in the Cazeau community in Port-Au-Prince. I couldn’t imagine staying anywhere else during my visits to Port-Au-Prince. Not only are the Jean-Louis a wonderful and welcoming family, who truly incorporate their guests into their family while giving them world class accommodations, I always meet the COOLEST people. Last year it was Dave and company of the Mass Design Group, who partnered with Partners in Health on a hospital that will usher in a new age in modern health care.

This year I got a chance to meet Zach Halberd. I was immediately enthralled when I saw a RED camera sitting on the ground outside of one of the guest’s rooms. Later in the day when I met its owner, I immediately started picking Zach’s brain about what shooting was like. Our conversation ended up focusing on one question that is still unanswered. As a photographer or cinematographer, how does one navigate the ethics of who, when, and what to shoot particularly as a “hired gun”?

Before he left, he gifted me with a mission. During his time in Haiti he had received a hand cranked flashlight. He had promised to find a deserving family but was unable to. Having heard of my work this summer, he felt that I might be able to find the right person.  I can’t wait to report when I’ve found that person.
